This can include stereotypes such as class age gender groups. Looking at in which ways I control my design to specific stereotypes I have homed in on I am looking at this piece of design which I created this year for Greggs rebrand. My target audience was work orientated 25-35 yr olds I was aiming to make greggs alot more classy rather than cheap greasy take-out I chose the mocha and brown as they related to posh coffees and clean cut got away from grease proof papers and brown parcel wrapping. I took the imagery on doillies as they are very old fashioned boutique like which would also apply to the older age range as I also had the issue of not out casting customers they had already.MissBeckyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10412222876925373477noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4826054898968967070.post-49432393828465707882011-03-28T11:12:00.000-07:002011-03-28T13:23:14.579-07:00Task 5- sustainability and capitalismsustainability is described in the text as an ecological factor in which must be changed yet due to a range of different issues within the social environment this isn't always possible. Not all societies can afford to be sustainable and therefore can have detrimental effect to these communities. Therefore although it is seen as a very communal lifestyle change unfortunately it is not that simple. Who wants to engage with and how they react to the information which is being constantly put in front of them, what they take in and what art they filter out. Art and design isn't always there for aesthetic purpose it has meaning tries to communicate a message inform or persuade none of this matters if you don’t engage or react to it. Audience plays a key role in the way designers and artist portray their feelings or political stance on society depending who receives the message out to reflects the reaction taken.

When looking into who goes to art galleries there are many misconceptions and this evolves around the ideology the type of people who do engage with this kind of art. According to National statistics online, as people get older the visits to art galleries are reduced. A higher percentage of people attend an art gallery 2-4 times and are marginally women. The people in our society like to think the option to go and visit art galleries is always there and open to the masses and in many cities this is true as there are more open and free galleries to visit. Yet recently government funding for this has been cut and soon free galleries will be a thing of the past. Will this effect society greatly? What do the people of today want from attending the exhibitions personal pleasure looking at pretty art works or do the paintings / sculptures effect how they feel or look at the world. Its difficult to say wether this would create a major divide in society if people are wanting to engage and enjoy doing so then shouldn’t they be willing to pay?‘Each has within him the undying desire to create, to contribute something to the world, to leave his mark upon society; each has the necessity to earn and provide for his family.’ . Graphic Design is a communication tool which breaks the barriers of class, as audience drives the design they can affect the tone of voice to ensure everyone understands fully. ‘Graphic design is the most universal of all arts it is all around us, explaining, decorating, identifying; imposing meaning on the world’ (Newark 2002:6) Sociable responsibility of the designer lends itself more to the economical factors of the design industry which is waste and to use recyclable materials. ‘As for the ecological issue, no one comes out against the environment and as the “printed on recyclable paper” tag becomes ever more fashionable convincing clients to go the green or more environment-friendly route becomes progressively easier.” (Rock 1994:191) As an industry which uses paper resources to deliver the message to the mass culture this problem is always going to arise unless more economical means to show the communication becomes available. “Everything you do is garbage” (Jacobs 1994:185) Karrie Jacobs touches on this point how to annoy a graphic designer what she is saying is true though a paper based design will end its life in the bin. Yet I don’t see this as such a bad thing as it constantly keeps design new fresh bringing new ideas and ways of communicating to light if something can last forever it would be regurgitated over and over or that you would see the same piece of art hundreds of times! Companies in the Graphic Design industry are becoming more aware of doing the “right” thing and are buying into using recyclable materials etc and more business is arriving due to this change in society and what we deem to be the best for the country even though we may not practice this at home/work ourselves. As technology advances the design industry with move progressively with it to advance in the optimum communication skills. “Museums exist to preserve selective objects that together build a consistent ensemble, and hopefully support and communicate a strong idea. In doing so they are meant to educate and stimulate progress. Since design, both graphics and of objects have an impact on everybody's life and a better understanding of it will work to everybody's advantage, a design museum is a meaningful and valuable construct.” ( Antonelli 2006:76) A way to document and collect great pieces of design which have created social effects possibly change the way we look at design gain a greater appreciation and add value.

Why do we consider museum art to be more valuable? The art exists in the “real world” yet they haven’t paid for doing this therefore its purely been created through passion and love for the art. ‘At a mundane level, what practitioners really mean by the “real” of the “real world” is money. Time is money and there isn't any of it for “pussyfooting around” for empty talk and fancy idealism.’ (Robertson 1971:188) Which leads me onto the next point which could be a reflection of the type of people who visit these art galleries are posh upper class engaging professionals? Therefore fine art is to be seen as a luxury item and the only people who can afford to buy it are the upper class. The aura that we get from walking around an art gallery also portrays this feeling its not shown as a fun activity more of a serious and boring thing to do. You would not consider lower classes to be engaging with the art and really taking in its hidden purposes as for the lower class this would be irrelevant to them and consider there is more important things in life dont necessarily have time for this luxury and no money to spend on pleasure seeking activities. The vibe an art gallery gives of is cleanliness, silence, professionalism. Not creativity free spirit yet this is what a fine artist lives for so why do they display there material in a confined white washed area to be viewed by people who don’t practice life in similar ways. So do they have a target audience when painting/sculpting etc in order to appeal to the purchaser.

Graphic design is one way which highlights the structure in society and many social classes as you need to relate your work to a specific target audience. They get a brief which can be open or quite specific in order to achieve its full potential Graphic design is out there in the real world engaging with different people and in different means wether its information leaflet a flyer poster etc. Therefore finding the answer to does graphic design have more social effect may be harder to define than thought as different pieces of graphics are created for the different classes and purpose. In a Marxist view he says the thoughts of the few upper class are more important than the more! When relating this to any artwork and judgments of taste there is always power, politics and class underlying that view point. The upper class have more social control and can depict what the lower class are involved in by legitimising the country. When debating wether graffiti is an art form and should it be legal / not seen as a major crime the country spend millions to obliterate it who is it that are making these decisions what is art worthy or not? The upper classes which brings it back to the superstructure and how the base don’t really have a say in what decisions are being made, its as if there being taken out of there hands yet there the ones being effected by the government funding cuts. No such thing as ‘free’ art The graffiti artist who produce there work and in situations where it can be viewed for free and for the mass culture rather than the few yet this is illegal. Unless the upper classes want to buy a piece of artwork done by ‘Banksy’ ( a well know politically driven graffiti artist) which sells for £50‘000. Where does culture draw the line on graffiti vs art. ‘The former sought to entice graffiti writers to paint on canvases to be sold in galleries; the latter used graffiti as a sign of urban disorder and argued for its suppression as a first step in reasserting law and order against unrestrained youth and minority groups.’ (Ferrel J 1993) Journal of criminal Justice and popular culture. This quote makes the point of culture trying to control popular culture if graffiti starts becoming popular the government have realsied this could become and issue so are trying to ease the divide by “meeting” the graffiti artists half way yet have completely missed the purpose of them doing this as political stunt showing their free thinkers. Trying to keep control and a hold on society reducing ‘Art in the public sphere’ definition: The public sphere was and is a free flowing, creative realm where people can meet debate, contemplate and communicate with a largeness of scope. It is fundamental to democracy, to mass political movements, and to the modern evolution of art and science. Graphic design is considered as commercial art yet even that is being controlled as there are certain things which are not allowed to be published or shown due to copy write and political correctness etc, Culture jamming is also another method in which can be used to subvert a message or meaning to the mass culture. This can have diverse effects on the society and how we view life today. This can also encourage graffiti artists to express their art and bring the art to the masses with a more edgy involvement. ‘Whilst ‘public art’ has continually suffered from its mixed role as art and town planning, in the UK for example the perceived success of Anthony Gormleys Angel of the North has since recruited public art for the purposes of ‘place-making’ and the branding of cities.’

http://ixia-info.com/art-the-public-sphere-journal/ Sending mixed messages to the public art is deemed to be good in cities and as towns are being developed art works are appearing more often yet what who decides what gets chosen not the public in most cases! ‘All forms of education act as social implementation of these forms reconstructs society in various ways’ (Apple 1986) Art education and what the children of today are producing as they come through society reconstructs what is developing tomorrow and our views upon this. Trying to create a multicultural art world looking at more pluralistic views bringing diversity into society. There are curricular restraints within all education therefore art will not be taught as a free thinking subject yet artists of a fine art nature will continue to push the boundaries of what excepted within culture. Dominant ideologies provide the government with a stance on making a democratic society with them being the for front of what’s to be viewed by the masses.

My conclusion to looking at different elements of this argument would side with art having more of a social effect as it is deemed to have more value, graphic design is mainly a product of waste and not always recyclable. As they work to constraints and similar layouts and formats the public see it as homogenous rubbish most of the time, as too much bad graphics is pumped out into society everyday almost forced upon the public sector to accept it through mail shots and flyers large numbers of people are being targeted at one time. Reduces the aura of receiving it too easily disposable and accessible. Whereas a print of a painting is considered less valuable to the with holder yet not rubbish! Art which is featured in galleries becomes more worthy as it ages which isn’t the case for advertisements and flyers etc. Art is contained in galleries leading us to believe its more precious art form and you pay to see it. With fine art you can build a stronger relationship with the artist as you know their name and can visit specific exhibitions to view the works of. Society takes for granted the work and skill involved in making a piece of graphic design therefore it has less affect. Does not cause you to engage as it communicates well and quickly therefore having the diverse effect of less time and thought went into producing it.

Bibliography

Berger, J. These were parts which were able to communicate to any social forms including the telephone radio etc and what effects the information reaching its target audience.
Therefore this can be applied to Graphic design in many ways as you have a message ( information) and you need to send this message out to an audience which will then decode it to understand its meaning or relevance.
The christmas advertisements for Coca-cola have a very large target audience there colours of red remind you of christmas anyway and the actually se Santa in the advert and plenty of toys making you buy into this idea of luxury family orientated ideals. Using the model to depict this into sections information source in coca-cola the transmitter for this would be the designer/advertiser the channel would be how this is then displayed e.g billboards the noise effecting this would be the positioning of the board/ what other adverts are effecting it possibly diet ads or other soft drink suppliers the receiver would be people viewing the poster trying to decode its message. This advertisement for coca-cola doesn't rely on the receiver to do much decoding into what its trying to reveal or sell this happens as we make a relation with the colours and the brands identity this becomes redundant as there isn't much of a hidden meaning and is more about aesthetic visuals "look on the coke side of life" buying into lifestyle having lots of presents etc. therefore entropy isnt at a loss as there isnt much of a message to get lost within the design.

Title: The social effect of Graphic design

Even though graphics is seen in everyday life its a very passive form of design so does it have social effect?

Many people engage with design everyday and is applied to most paper based sources in masses, yet graffiti is becoming the art form of this bombarding society with a message.

The angel of the north os a piece of fine art as is graffiti yet why is one seen to be more acceptable than another?

We see the uses of graphic design everyday and often recieve things such as mailouts underground maps etc for free yet a free art gallery is going to be something of the past does this mean fine art is considered more value and why is this?

Is graphic design considered as a 'waste' art form due to its paper based form in most cases the design is ignored and the fact wasted paper is more of an issue.

Behind judgements of taste lie power politics and class.'Structural standardization aims at standard reactions' (Adorno 1941:76) Adorno refers to the structuring of society as popular music is aimed at the masses and there is more working class than upper class by producing music which is of a very similar genre to previous songs which have been a hit and released you are subjecting the masses to what you want them to hear and therefore they are more likely to enjoy and like the music you have produced for them, resulting in more record sales.
Unverifiable: the inmate must never know wether he is being looked at at any one moment; but he must be sure that he may always be so' (Foucault 1977: 80) CCTV makes us act in a way which makes you feel guilty even if not doing anything wrong at that time almost as if your guilty unless proven otherwise it has a real sense of invasion into your life its almost being controlled by someone you cant even see and don't know.'The panopticon functions as a kind of laboratory of power.' (Foucault 1977:84) The panopticon was a tower in which the guards would evaluate the inmates behavior and take control of the situation should there be one. Much like our society with police vs the people today.MissBeckyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10412222876925373477noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4826054898968967070.post-39971085335319122792010-12-02T15:18:00.000-08:002010-12-02T15:18:53.576-08:00

Barnard explores various subjects around the matter such as aura function and cultural significance.
Firstly there is an argument to suggest that the artist and the designer do different things because the nature in which they both work are completely different, and both have an alternate course and drive to the activity which they are undertaking. Walker (1983:20) This suggests that mass media products such as those of Graphic Design, are the work of groups of specialists operating as teams in response to briefs, commissions or specifications laid down to employers or clients. In conjunction to this point he is arguing that artists work at a much more leisurely pace, have more artistic and creative freedom to there practice. All this is being taken away from a Graphic designer as they have to produce something potentially for a client plus it has a purpose, also they are designing to potentially please the client who isn't of that professional area of practice. Some would say it would be absurd to be asking the client for their creative input in an area of design which they are not familiar. This is where aura is lost and through mechanical reproduction image and text are being reproduced time and time again ‘Aura is the sense of uniqueness and authenticity that is felt before a work of art , is ‘inseparable’ from that of arts place in a tradition authenticity is grounded in the ritual or cultic function of art (Benjamin 1992: 214, 217) By not being able to have a unique piece of Graphic Design wether that being an album cover, photograph or otherwise it takes away almost the value of art. Fine artists its almost feel as if they are being undermined of their workmanship. Graphic designers work often to a tight deadline and produce high quality work where the artist would take their time and have the perception it takes as long as it takes! Also It is argued that digital prints can be anywhere at one time where as a painting/ fine art piece can only be in one place at a specific time. Yet to conflict with this valued point Engles argues that people in every occupation, including artists and graphic designers have turned into wage-labourers (Marx and Engels 1968: 70; 1985: 82) In a way for fine artists graphic designers have made their work seemingly of a higher value in society, as graphic design is commonly seen in every day life and could be argued the workmanship is being taken for granted, where-as a painting is not seen very frequently and valued to a greater extent. Additionally graphic design is designed to be legible and readable a simple easy communication strategy, yet art has a deeper meaning something which the soul has to read into, does this make fine art more valuable? Does this create more aesthetic value? This leads on to the argument about cultural significance within society, art is perceived to have lasting value where-as graphic design is said to be ‘ephemeral’ (Cronan 2000: 216) graphic design is temporary it is about communicating a subject to the target audience at that time: promoting, informing or instructing it is about information and as you know this can change on a daily basis. People still need to be informed in a effortless manner of these alterations. ‘Most designers speak of their activities as a problem-solving process because designers seek solutions to communication problems’ Wild (1997: 94) There will always be a debate to wether art does differ to graphic design on a creative and expressionist manner, arguments such as the ones which are highlighted above weigh up each side of this debate. Both practices display some form of creativity wether you can say that creativity is art or not lies another problem to be explored.MissBeckyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10412222876925373477noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4826054898968967070.post-36966218746583311042010-03-23T12:47:00.001-07:002010-03-23T12:47:44.395-07:00Summarising the Modern textThe first decade of the twentieth century artist began trying to create something new moving old techniques further on and advancing common technology. They used old nineteenth century machines and began transforming them into something innovative, by doing this they would be able to move art into a direction which would potentially change the way in which we view it. Modernity was a form of experience an awareness to change and of an adaption to change, this was moved further on by the artists of the avant-garde and art had become thoroughly internationalized. Art moved on to be something of expression and these was showed by current movements such as futuristic and cubism drawings, these were highly influenced by urban modernity other artists such as Kirschner and Boccioni remained legible and diverse even through the pressures of the change. The question that people were beginning to pose was what does cubism mean? How people were thinking of it and reading it became an area of conflict. The autonomous decoration of a surface, penetration below a surface appearance to the constraints of ‘true reality’ ; a modern Realism of ‘conception’ transforming the terms, but none the less retaining critical interest. Two artists named Corbet and Kartian transcended into creating art which was to be called idealism in which a picture could achieve what language could not. This was a representation of ding an sich; a Nietzschean imposition of new beauty, moulding the masses to the artists own truth. These were canvassed within the five years of the emergence and of a recognisably new style around 1910. The problem to autonomous art to a wider social change has remained constitutive of all ambitious art in the modern period. Cubism marked a turning point, a hinge , as it were, between the modern art of the nineteenth Century and what was to become the condition of modern art in the twentieth.

Harrison, C and Wood, P. The sign of this image would be the product itself the ‘New Sexy Curves Mascara”, Signifiers which show the audience that it is aimed at girls are the various images of a women also there are drips of mascara on the page which is made to look glossy and vibrant. Rimmel have used advertising techniques such as using a model which the audience can relate to Ellis Bexter is a famous artist and some one who a young teenager could relate to and aspire to be like. She has been airbrushed so her skin looks softer and more attractive making the audience believe they are purchasing the whole look and the mascara would make them have skin like this. The models expression denotes to me that she is proud of wearing the make-up and feel glamorous. Connotations of the image are that the model is pictured in many up market classy outfits and suggests that you are buying into this way of life. They also show a pair of smooth shiny legs this has no connection with the product in sale so why include this? They want the advert to appear sexy and sophisticated showing the viewer the best assets of the women's body and what you can potentially have buy purchasing the mascara. The type is very interesting they have used a curly type for the “Sexy Curves” denotes how your eyelashes will be big and curled upwards. They reduce the size and opacity of “For up to” so that the audience wont be able to read this unless up close to the advert. The last line says “Live the London look” again looking to convince the audience of glamour sophistication professionalism and successfulness.MissBeckyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10412222876925373477noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4826054898968967070.post-20994448612499170062010-03-21T11:07:00.001-07:002010-03-21T11:08:46.378-07:00The document<img style="display:block; Here the sign is the advert and and shows its denotive meaning of advertising mens and women's fragrances. Signifiers are the image of David strongly leading and holding Victoria down displaying his strength and masculinity. The way that Victoria is holding her head and her expression is almost orgasmic the desire for David is profound in this image and screams sexuality. The signifiers of this would be the lighting it shows a relaxed intimate vibe the shadow from the small lamp creates sexual tension and desire for one another, also the idea around its dark and no-ones looking do what they please!. Victoria has a lot of her upper body flesh showing this is a way of reminding men of naked body and relates to sexual relations. The way that David hides half of his face displays a mysterious feeling to the image and he stares directly into the camera potentially connecting with the audience also known as “come to bed eyes” buying into this affectionate emotions. It is interesting how they are selling both their fragrances on the same advert the bottles suggest sophistication the way the reflections are used also sells the idea of the perfect relationship both complimenting each other in the partnership. It is a direct indication of what they are selling and an iconic way of doing so.MissBeckyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10412222876925373477noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4826054898968967070.post-33351985710542752922009-11-07T13:54:00.001-08:002009-11-07T13:54:47.054-08:00Evaluating this piece of advertisement created and distributed in the 1900’s by Savile Lumley expresses to me the importance of joining the army at this time and it was typically aimed at men/fathers of the middle / upper class families. I have made this assumption due to my previous knowledge of how the army recruitment's took place the working class were obviously not as well off as the middle and upper class people of the society at that time and therefore would have most likely already enrolled to go fight for there country, as they would possibly been offered a much larger wage than they would currently be on therefore had nothing to loose. The advert is clearly war propaganda it is simple and effective. The gentleman in the image is looking directly into the viewers eyes this is to get across the importance and the feeling like is more personal he is talking to YOU. They are trying to get across the feeling of guilt if you do not enroll and if you do it is something which you should be proud of and want to do fighting for your country is courageous. This isn’t a poster which would have been released on its own there are a series of them which would be campaigning to the public, these got released just before the the forced subscription for the army there was a major crisis due to the amount of numbers dropping to want to join the forces. The details in the image are very direct yet subtle in the way they are used for example the soldiers which the boy is playing with are glamorized to look more appealing they don’t look like soldiers of war more like guards which wouldn't be the case. Adding to this point the whole idea that the child wants to play with them he sees them as his idles people to look up to soldiers of war encouraging fathers to want to enroll so there children look up to them. The curtains contain a red rose which symbolizes England. The arm chair has fleur de le printed on it symbolizing the queens property. The question which is being proposed to the audience is “Daddy, what did YOU do in the Great War?.” I took from this that they are trying to glamorize the war by calling it Great its going to be the biggest war yet therefore you should want to get yourself involved, yet this is only an assumption that it will be called this and more importantly that Britain will be victorious.
The second image which i have looked at here is from “ The Uncle Sam Range” this was distributed in (1876) By Schumacher & Ettlinger, New York. This advertisement has many differences to the Savile Lumley piece it isn’t as direct yet they are both Propaganda yet this one is American and the other British. This image is aimed more at the lower middle class men I say men because of the head of this family is a man dressed in similiar outfit to uncle sam the black slave and the women are feeding him making this apparent. They are trying to sell this idea of the dream lifestyle they are actually advertising the cooker which isn’t very apparent at first, there are key details contained in this very hectic image which you must pick up on to understand the full impact. Such things like the receipt showing the “Bill Of Fayre” there are many countries and what they assume they would want to eat Ireland are being assumed to just want to eat potatoes also this idea of America paying the bill for all these countries to eat. The subtleties of the image suggesting its American propaganda America trying to save the world in the next 100 years (indicated by the clock) “feeding the world”. The image is a strong advertisement like the one above the eagle is patriotic to America and the decor of the room is over the top with American colours stripes and stars they clearly want to show they are dedicated to there nationality. Another way which they have showed this in the clock the year is 100 years since they claimed independence they can now stand alone and are wealthy now they want to help other countries in difficulty. The children in the image are showing clothing with Dixie west meaning the south New England- East West- wild west children lesser than uncle Sam thats why they are in the background they are eating with him from as he has saved all these parts of America. The font is quite chunky at the bottom of the page Western type which is significant as this used to be the savage land then saved by the americans and now is formally known as “ The land of the free!”.MissBeckyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10412222876925373477noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4826054898968967070.post-50346276438456380692009-11-06T06:58:00.000-08:002009-11-06T06:59:13.719-08:00<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 217px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_MGkiUauTbic/SvQ5s9GErwI/AAAAAAAAAJA/jruM6EAm5fk/s320/LumleyDaddy1915.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401005297601130242" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_MGkiUauTbic/SvQ5sm4PlQI/AAAAAAAAAI4/0TzwAIy5dVc/s320/uncle+sam+2+-larger.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401005291637544194" />

Compare and contrast the two images in relation to the following-
a) The choice and organisation of font and style of illustration
b) The purpose and meaning of the image
c) The intended audience of the image
d) The social and historical context of the image, such as social values at the timeMissBeckyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10412222876925373477noreply@blogger.com0
